Well, this was entirely too much fun. I got a chance to ride in the back seat of Gordie Seuell's Yak-52. I'm ashamed to admit that I have not done anything even remotely related to aerobatics before now, so all of this (including the spins) were an entirely new experience.
Gordie demonstrated a spin, a couple aileron rolls, loops, cloverleafs, a chandelle, a Cuban 8, and a barrel roll. Then he gave me a chance to try aileron rolls and loops. I was able to manage passable versions of these by the end of our session. Sort of. Of course, the day wouldn't have been complete without a few low passes followed by an aileron roll.
Before this, the decision to build an -7 (instead of a -9) was just based on my guess that I'd probably like aerobatics. This was a big confirmation of that guess . . . I'm glad the RV mission profile is so versatile as to manage both cross-country and aerobatics in the same airplane.
