I'm taking this week off of work (along with my dad, who has called in some
vacation, too) to really try to finish up the wings and get the canopy project
started. I guess we'll see how this goes . . .
We're trying to get the wings to the airport today, and there's all sorts of
odds and ends that we'll have to finish up before that happens. It's more like
a large number of small projects that we've got to just get wrapped up.
We haven't tested the nav lights yet, and since we're finishing up the wiring in the
wings today, it seems like a good time to do this.
|
Yup, they both work.
|
Finishing up the wiring, here. Connectors for the wires in the wingtips have been installed,
and the we're doing local grounding out at the wingtips, so those have been installed, too.
|
Installed the autopilot servo. It's pretty much good to go - this is just putting it together
again, really, it's been in and out a few times.
|
Here, we have installed the connectors for the nav and strobe lights.
|
Testing the whole thing: wing wiring works wonderfully!
The strobes work, too, but it's difficult to take a picture of that. Trust me, they work, and
well enough that we were both seeing spots for about 20 minutes.
|
Pitot tube is installed - this is pretty straightforward, just bending the tubing and
then installing the screws . . .
|
. . . and then the aluminum tubing for the tube has to be attached to the other tube.
It's just squished onto there (used hot water to get it on there) and as much as that looks
not really secured, trust me: it's not going anywhere.
|
Time to move these things to the airport! Let's call Ken Hanes, a
friend of my dad that is involved in racing cars, in a rather big
way.
So, obviously,
the trailer that we're using here is typically used to move cars,
so it should be able to hold wings pretty well. This worked
just fine.
|
It's pretty easy to see what's going on, here - we're rolling the wings down the driveway,
here . . .
|
. . . and there they are on the trailer. After lots of tying things down, we're pretty
much ready to go.
|
It's a little bit nerve-wracking to see these things going down the road. We got a few
weird looks, but not as many as you'd think: this is Alabama, after all, and folks drive down
the road with stranger stuff than airplane wings.
|
Safely in the hangar!
|
Right now, this is the only other tenant in the hangar: Larry Becker's RV-4. These hangars
can hold two RVs nicely, so until my 7A gets out here and Jim's 9A gets out here, Larry will
have plenty of room.
|
Quite a day. Tomorrow we'll start messing around with the canopy frame.
