25 April 06 - Transponderings

. . . for lack of a better word

Starting to think about getting the correct wires to the the transponder, which in our case is a Garmin GTX-327. We've gotten the installation manual off of the Garmin website, and it's posted here with the usual disclaimer that it's probably best to go check their website to make sure you've got the latest version if you're planning on using this in your airplane.

Getting power to it is going to be fairly straightforward, however, we've also got to get it on speaking terms with the Dynon's altitude encoder. That's all in the future, right now, we're just figuring out where to run wires.

Looking back through the radio stack. You can see the two grommets where the wires will go, and all the wires we'll have to run around this thing, too.

Oh. Also, in the manual, it says that the transponder isn't supposed to be mounted closer than 3 feet to the antenna because of potential RF interference. Alas, our antenna is just a tad closer than this as it's mounted on the bottom of the fuselage right under the seatpans. Not sure if this is going to be an issue given that the plane is metal, so a brief survey of other metal-airplane owners is probably in order.
