18 April 06 - Canopy Frame Drilling, Labels Arrive

Trying to get the front of the canopy frame together today . . . this is the first real work on the actual canopy, although the canopy latch has been together for awhile, and the hinges got put together yesterday, sort of.

Step one is to cleco these two parts together.

What we'll be doing is match drilling the skin to the back tube that's near the bottom of the picture. Obviously, you've got to get it lined up so you get pretty close to the center of the tube.

If you clamp these parts (forward side of the frame), it seems to help it line up better.

End result. These will eventually be drilled out so we can use 4 size rivets, but they're smaller just for now.

Hmmm. The fit's not so good, there, but that's okay. We'll get it closer than this, it'll just require working with these parts for awhile.

Something we've been curious about for awhile, and this is all good: all the instruments seem to fit nicely under here - no clearance issues.

Oh, also labels and a placard from Chief Aircraft have both shown up in the mail. Pretty happy with the results, here.

Passenger warning placard - oddly enough, this didn't come with adhesive on the back, so it's now attached to the glove box door with epoxy.

Labels for the elevators (left) and flaps (right). 6-inch ruler is provided for scale.

Ah! And one last thing. This last 1/4 inch hole that has to be drilled: this was really difficult to do with a short drill bit, so a quick trip to Home Depot resulted in the purchase of a really long 1/4 inch drill bit which works much better, as can be seen below:

Yup. That works.

Canopy work will probably get put on the back burner for awhile when dad gets back home, actually. It's difficult to work on the canopy and the wiring at the same time - the parts that you need to have on to work on the canopy need to be off for getting to the forward fuselage to work on the wiring. We're (hopefully) starting to think about finishing the wiring up, so we'll knock that out and then come back and work on the canopy.
