15 April 06 - Canopy Hinge Putterings

Starting work on the canopy, sort of, even though wiring is still a ways from being complete.

Part of this is made more interesting because the directions are not as clear as perhaps they would be in an ideal world. The process that you do to drill the blocks would ideally be done before the front fuselage is riveted together. When you're finishing up the forward fuselage, the directions tell you that it's okay to go ahead and rivet it together. A few pages later in the canopy section, it tells you to do this before you rivet it together. Hmmm.

This can be worked around, though. I think. We'll see.

Started by making making the C-619 spacers and finding the blocks that will eventually be the C-617 and C-618 parts, a few holes from now. Thankfully, the UHMW blocks were already the right sizes.

Oh - stuff in the mail from Van's - their primer kit (sans solenoid, which I already bought from Spruce) and an oil quick drain for the engine.

This is a part where this would have been easier if it weren't already in one big piece - match drilling the block to the forward fuselage frame. This is how I got around it . . . scotch tape, plus more scotch tape after the picture was taken, plus just holding it.

Pins that will eventually be part of the canopy hinge - this is after the end (threaded parts) have been ground off, as per the plans.

More weirdness to get around the fact that this is already riveted: this should be match drilled from the block to the subpanel rib, but you can't get the block on the outside if it's already riveted together - it goes too far forward. This is a template that was match drilled from C-617, and then we match drilled that template to the rib. Worked fine.

About to match drill the two bolt holes to the F-644 rib (on the other side of the bushing blocks, you can't see it.) If this picture looks a bit weird - keep in mind that the top skin is on now, and it's pretty reflective . . . that's why it looks like there are twice as many bolts as there should be.

It wasn't a big deal to match drill the smaller bolt holes to F-644 - pretty easy to get a right angle drill bit in there. The larger (1/4 inch) hole is a different story. I'll have to track down a long drill bit in order to make that work. Sounds like a trip to Home Depot is in order!
